London Transport - Victoria line underground extension to Brixton - 1972

The Brixton - or phase 2 - extension of the Victoria line opened in 1972 after the earlier opening of the Walthamstow - Victoria section. This leaflet shows the line south through Stockwell - and is one of the very few items ever issued by London Transport not wholly in the standard Johnston typeface. The early seventies were the lowest ebb in many ways for the corporate identity of the Underground prior to the re-affirmation of the company's own typeface.

The old municipal operations of Manchester Corporation Transport in the pre-war years when it operated tram and bus services. R Stuart Pilcher, the general manager, had arrived from Edinburgh transport and whereas he had appeared to be pro-tram in that city he quickly set in chain the pre-WW2 abandonment of most of Manchester's tram system, a conversion completed in 1949.

London Underground 1959-tube stock diagrams folder, 1960

London Transport - or London Underground - issued a series of 'pocket guides' for operating staff - drawn by Alec Gorton this folder shows the layout of equipment in the individual cars and sets. The 1959-stock (similar to the 1956-ts and 1960/2-ts) drew heavily on the pre-war 1938-ts apart from the fact that it was not painted but delivered in aluminium silver finishes.
